Cinematic & Long Range

Cinematic FPV creates breathtaking aerial footage that was previously impossible — flying through windows, chasing cars, diving down cliff faces. Long range pushes the boundaries of what's possible with extended flight time and radio/video range.

Cinematic Techniques

Cinematic flying is about intentional, planned shots. Unlike freestyle, every movement serves the story. Slow, smooth, deliberate.

TechniqueDescriptionBest Use
The RevealRise up over an obstacle to reveal a landscape or subject. Starts hidden, ends spectacular.Mountain tops, city skylines, ocean views
OrbitCircle around a subject at constant distance and altitude. Smooth, continuous motion.Buildings, monuments, events, people
Tracking ShotFollow a moving subject (car, person, boat) at matched speed.Action sequences, sports, vehicles
Fly-ThroughFly through windows, doorways, arches, or narrow spaces. Extreme proximity.Architecture, abandoned buildings, forests
Top-DownCamera pointing straight down, creating a flat map-like perspective.Patterns, landscapes, shadows
Nose-Down DiveDive from altitude at steep angle, pulling up at last moment.Cliffs, waterfalls, tall structures
Parallax MoveMove laterally while keeping subject centered, foreground blurs past.Trees, fences, corridors
DronieFly backward and up from a subject, revealing more of the scene.Introductions, establishing shots

Filming Settings

Getting great footage requires optimizing your camera settings. Here's what the pros use.

SettingRecommendedNotes
Resolution4K or 2.7K4K for final delivery, 2.7K for easier editing
Frame Rate30fps (standard) / 60fps (slow-mo)30fps for most shots, 60fps for slow motion
Shutter Speed1/60 (30fps) or 1/120 (60fps)Double frame rate for natural motion blur
Color ProfileD-Log / D-Cinelike / FlatFlat profiles retain more dynamic range for grading
ISO100-400Lower = less noise. Use ND filters to keep ISO low
White BalanceManual (5500K daylight)Never use auto WB — it shifts mid-shot
ND FilterND8-ND32Essential for maintaining 180° shutter rule
FOVNarrow or MediumLess distortion for cinematic look

The 180° Shutter Rule

For natural motion blur, set shutter speed to double your frame rate. At 30fps → 1/60s shutter. At 60fps → 1/120s shutter. Since FPV cameras are bright outdoors, use ND filters to achieve these slow shutter speeds without overexposing.

Long Range FPV

Long range flying means pushing beyond visual line of sight — exploring mountains, coastlines, valleys. It requires careful planning, redundant systems, and respect for the limits of your equipment.
