Freestyle is the soul of FPV. It's about creative expression through flight — flowing through landscapes, performing tricks, and finding lines that feel impossible. There are no rules, no gates, no judges. Just you, your quad, and whatever environment you choose to shred.
Freestyle FPV combines proximity flying with acrobatic maneuvers. Pilots fly through gaps, around objects, over buildings, and through forests — all while performing rolls, flips, dives, and power loops. The goal is to create visually stunning, fluid flights that feel like a first-person action movie.
| Maneuver | Description | Difficulty | Key Sticks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Power Loop | Full vertical loop while moving forward. The signature FPV move. | ★★★☆☆ | Full back pitch + throttle management |
| Roll | Barrel roll along the flight path. Keep the line smooth. | ★★☆☆☆ | Full roll input while maintaining forward pitch |
| Split-S | Half roll inverted + pull back to descend. Beautiful for losing altitude. | ★★★☆☆ | Half roll + full back pitch |
| Matty Flip | Backward flip while moving forward. Looks impossible to viewers. | ★★★★☆ | Forward pitch + yaw + roll simultaneously |
| Gap Shot | Fly through a narrow gap at speed. Precision proximity. | ★★★★☆ | Precise throttle and pitch control |
| Proximity Flying | Close to ground, walls, trees — inches away. Pure adrenaline. | ★★★★★ | All sticks — constant micro-adjustments |
| Trippy Spin | Continuous yaw spin while orbiting an object. Hypnotic effect. | ★★★★☆ | Full yaw + pitch/roll for orbit |
| Dive | Nose-down dive from altitude, pull out at last moment. | ★★★☆☆ | Full forward pitch + throttle cut, then pull up |
| Rubik's Cube | Combination of rolls, flips, and direction changes. | ★★★★★ | Complex stick combinations |
| Orbit | Fly in a circle around an object, keeping it centered. | ★★★☆☆ | Roll + yaw + throttle balance |
| Component | Freestyle Specs | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Frame | 5" true-X or stretched-X, 5mm arms | Durable, good balance of weight and strength |
| Weight | 550-700g (dry) | Heavier than racing = more stable, carries momentum |
| Motors | 2306 1700-1950KV (6S) | Smooth power delivery, not screaming fast |
| Props | 51433, 51466, or S5 | Mid-pitch for balanced thrust and efficiency |
| Battery | 6S 1300-1550mAh | 3-5 min flight time with punch-outs |
| Rates | 600-800°/s max, medium expo | Smooth center for tricks, fast edges for rolls |
| PIDs | Default or slightly higher D | Locked in stops, smooth turns |
| Video | DJI O4 or Walksnail HD | HD quality for filming, good penetration |
Most freestyle pilots fly at 20-35° camera angle. Lower angles (15-20°) are easier to learn but limit speed. Higher angles (35°+) are faster and more aggressive. Start at 25° and adjust based on feel. Remember: camera angle affects how you perceive the horizon — more tilt = more "looking down."
