Learning to Fly

Learning FPV is like learning to ride a bike — the first hours are frustrating, then suddenly everything clicks. This guide maps the path from complete beginner to confident pilot. Spoiler: simulators save you hundreds of dollars in crashes.

Flight Modes Explained

Betaflight offers three main flight modes. Understanding them is crucial for learning progression.

ModeBehaviorUse Case
ANGLE (Self-Level)Quad auto-levels when sticks are centered. Max tilt angle limited (default 45°). Sticks control angle, not rotation rate.Beginners, first flights, GPS rescue mode
HORIZONSelf-levels at low stick inputs, allows flips/rolls at full stick. Hybrid between Angle and Acro.Transition mode between Angle and Acro
ACRO (Rate)Sticks control rotation rate. Quad holds whatever angle you leave it at. No auto-level. Full 3D control. All FPV flying once learned. This is the mode.

Start in Acro

Most FPV instructors recommend starting in Acro mode from day one — on a simulator. Angle mode builds bad habits (relying on auto-level). Acro is harder initially but builds proper muscle memory that transfers to real flying.

Simulator Recommendations

Sims are essential. You'll crash 100+ times in a sim with zero cost. Crash 100 times on a real quad = $1000+ in repairs.

Connect Your Radio

All sims support USB connection from your radio (Radiomaster, Jumper, etc.). This is crucial — sim flying must feel identical to real flying. Configure the sim to match your radio's channel order (AETR) and rates.

Learning Phases

Phase 1: Simulator (2-10 hours)

Phase 2: Tiny Whoop / Micro (5-20 flights)

Phase 3: 5-Inch Outdoors (20-50+ flights)

Phase 4: Progression (ongoing)

Stick Rates

Rates control how fast your quad responds to stick input. Start slow, increase as your skills improve.

Skill LevelMax Rate (°/s)ExpoFeel
Beginner400-5000.3-0.4Very gentle, soft center
Intermediate600-7000.2-0.3Balanced, responsive
Advanced800-10000.1-0.2Fast, snappy
Pro Racer1000-15000.05-0.15Maximum speed
